Contact

You hit the ball behind your hitting shoulder.

Reach up and hit it above your shoulder, a little in front, arm straight.

One clip is enough.

  1. Step 1

    Film from the side

Set up on your hitting-arm side. Use slow motion if possible.

  2. Step 2

    Send it

No sensors, no coach on the sideline. Just your phone.

  3. Step 3

    See what to change

A frame from your own spike, with the mistake marked in red.

It's not about fixing everything.

It's about the first thing holding you back. Five checks, in the order they happen in a spike.

  1. 1Approach

Do you start slow and finish fast?

  2. 2Last steps and jump

Is your second-to-last step the longest, and do you land close to where you took off?

  3. 3Elbow

Does your elbow stay away from your ribs until contact?

  4. 4Arm swing

Do your hips and chest start the swing, and your arm finish it?

  5. 5Contact

Do you hit the ball at full reach, above and a little in front of your hitting shoulder?

Backed by a study of 167 Olympic players' arm swings, and the cues coaches already use.

Get past the wall.
